Matter · Information · Energy: separate ledgers, not an equality chain
What this is / is not
This is a ledger map: keep force, mass, and energy (often bookkeeping names in physics) apart from Shannon information and from a conditional thermodynamic interface. It is not a new unified field theory, and it does not duplicate the Information Dynamics / future-reachability ledger. That page tracks how information may rewrite reachable sets; this page insists we not squash several ledgers into one ontology slogan.
Status legend
standing discussion discipline; working worth formalizing or testing; speculative demotable; negative equality chain we refuse.
1. Force / mass / energy are ledgers, not “stuff”
standing Force is often a bookkeeping name
Force is not a stockpile. In mechanics it is closer to a name for the rate of momentum transfer. What a change of frame can make disappear is usually not a substance (textbook centrifugal force). In general relativity, free fall can locally feel no “gravity”—a space station is closer to continuous falling.
standing Particles and mass
In field-theory intuition, particles are excitations of fields, not bags of little balls. Much of a proton’s mass can be binding energy rather than a simple sum of quark rest masses.
standing E=mc² is not “matter turning into a different stuff called energy”
The rest-energy relation writes mass and energy as two unit systems for one conservation structure; after rearrangement, a change in rest mass is released in other forms. Textbook anchor: Einstein’s mass–energy relation (any standard relativity text)—not mystical conversion lore.
One-line series framing: physics keeps dissolving what you thought were “things” into ledgers—energy, force, mass, temperature, entropy are often account names, not refillable inventory.
2. Information is not a fourth kind of matter; Shannon ≠ meaning
standing Shannon information is first about distinguishability / coding
Given a distribution and a channel, information quantities track distinguishability and coding resources. They do not automatically equal meaning, value, experience, or “goods in a cosmic warehouse.” Public anchor: C. E. Shannon, A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1948).
standing Entropy is not “disorder”
In thermo / statistical mechanics, entropy is a count (e.g. \(S=k\ln\Omega\)); “disorder” is a contested metaphor. Entropy also depends on which apparatus can resolve or couple to differences—what changes is the set of devices and operations, not a thought.
3. The information–energy interface is conditional (Landauer path)
working Thermodynamic cost of logical erasure / reset
Landauer’s principle: under ideal conditions, irreversibly erasing one bit has a heat lower bound of order \(kT\ln 2\). This is a conditional interface for logical erasure/reset-class operations—not a per-thought bit tax, and not mind rewriting conservation laws. Public anchor: R. Landauer, Irreversibility and Heat Generation in the Computing Process, IBM J. Res. Dev. (1961; reprinted).
negative · refused mass = energy = information = consciousness
This site explicitly does not assert that equality chain, nor that “information ontology is already proven.” Mass–energy, Shannon quantities, Landauer costs, functional loops, and first-person experience are neighboring ledgers; interfaces must be measured one by one. Drawing a generative ladder or slogan unification is a retired entry.
4. Four neighboring ledgers, interfaces to test (research map)
- Physical state (mass / energy conservation and dynamics)
- Encoding and measurement (Shannon information, records, channels)
- Self-maintenance / control (functional loops, reportability, self-preservation)
- Plus: functional metrics do not entail subjective experience—consciousness is at least two ledgers
Edges mark “interfaces worth experimenting,” not a generation order or “they are the same essence.” If “observer” appears, start with the measurement chain (sensor → noise → memory → estimate → control); it does not automatically equal human consciousness.
5. Reachability impact: candidate cross-layer quantity (nail the premises)
speculative Draft working definition
If a cross-layer comparison word is needed, a candidate is reachability impact: after intervening on a trackable difference, how much the still-reachable states/actions change under a fixed time window and resource budget.
Premises must be nailed first: state space, intervention, time window, budget, baseline. Without them it is only pretty language. Whether it beats mutual information, information value, and similar tools in controlled tests remains open. Plain-language reachability-set definition: reachability ledger; this page does not retell that whole mainline.
What we explicitly do not say
- We do not say “mass = energy = information = consciousness.”
- We do not say “information ontology is already proven.”
- We do not merge Changsha business conversation with this physics bookkeeping into a “jointly signed on-site conclusion.”
Open questions worth pressing together
- Can “reachability impact” outperform mutual information / information value in serious controlled tests?
- Is there a pre-registrable, fail-able bridge between function and experience?
Please poke whichever interface lacks evidence—that is how this map earns its keep.
